 Merriott Short Mat Bowls Club

Short Mat Bowls is enjoyed by thousands of people all over the country and
is a sport for all ages and abilities.  Many clubs including Merriott have found
the need to invest in an electric roller because the mats are heavy
and need to be rolled up evenly, a task not always possible if the
stronger members are not on hand.  Although the game is played
by all ages it is fair to say the majority of players are of more
advanced years, and therefore an electric roller is an even greater
asset.

The club meets twice weekly, on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday evenings
in Merriott Village Hall.  Some of its members play for Somerset
County, as well as several others regularly participating in
tournaments held by the Somerset Short Mat Bowling Association, at
Blackbrook Leisure Centre in Taunton.  Friendly matches are held
frequently against other local clubs.  The Club also takes part
in one of the Triples Leagues in Chard over the winter months.  Not
all members want to take part in competitions and just come along to
enjoy the game and meet friends.  However, it can be a very
addictive game with fierce competition amongst clubs on occasion.

Most importantly, as far as Merriott is concerned, it is a
sport in which anyone can participate without it being too strenuous;
it is fun and gets people out of their homes and into the community.
